THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY

The first information about the presence of organs in the area of Bergamo goes back to 1396, when ancient parchments document the utilization of portative organs in S. Maria Maggiore's church, the Civic Chapel of Bergamo.

Nevertheless, it is likely that even before this date the organ was used in the most important seats of the town, that's to say in churches, monasteries and castles, as it had already happened in other towns nearby. At that time the organ activity was cultivated by friars belonging to mobile orders, in particular the Umiliati, who were active in Bergamo for the production and trade of wools.

In general the organs were quite rough in the construction and their sound was almost hard and crude.
